Welcome to NAZAR.
NAZAR is an independent journalism project on Afrofuturism and surveillance. This project is curated by Vanessa Taylor, a Black Muslim journalist.
New editions of NAZAR drop on the first and third Wednesday of each month. In addition, the NAZAR Reading Collective meets from 12-1:30pm EST on the Fridays following each newsletter’s publication.
Details to participate in the reading group are included in the e-mailed version of each newsletter only.
What Does The Newsletter Contain?
On the first Wednesday, you will get original coverage from myself or a guest writer. This may be a reported article, profiles of different organizations / projects, interviews, and more.
The second Wednesday will be a brief (4/500 word) reflection from myself on the month’s readings. In addition, it will include:
A roundup of three works by people of color that I have read. They may be recently published or old things. My main focus is on technology and surveillance but I may include other subjects.
Another roundup, this time of three digital campaigns / events or organizations to participate in or show love to. I come from an organizing background so I want to use whatever platform I have to support ongoing work.
Do I Have To Pay?
Subscribing is not required but simply a way you can support my work. You can subscribe for $7 a month or $70 for the entire year. If you’re feeling generous, you can subscribe as a Founding Member for $150 per year.
There are more than enough paywalls in journalism. I don’t want cost to be a barrier, especially not for a topic that I believe is deeply important. That is why all of NAZAR’s posts are free to access.
Who Are You?
I’m Vanessa Taylor, a Black Muslim journalist / writer based in Philadelphia and originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Through articles, essays, fiction, and more, I focus on Black Muslim womanhood and technology.
Among other things, I am a 2017 Deeply Rooted Emerging Leaders Fellow with Muslim Wellness, a 2019 Echoing Ida cohort member, 2020 Bitch Media Writing Fellow In Technology, and the founding Editor-in-Chief of The Drinking Gourd, a Black Muslim literary magazine.
Feel free to check out my portfolio.
How Do I Contact You?

Please do not message me on my personal e-mails. NAZAR is temporarily closed to guest pitches.
