Assalamu Alaikum.

Welcome to NAZAR.

NAZAR is an anti-surveillance newsletter and independent journalism project by Vanessa Taylor.

New editions of NAZAR drop on the first and third Friday of each month.

What Does NAZAR Contain?

Each edition of NAZAR includes original content from myself or a guest writer. This may be a reported article, profiles of different organizations / projects, interviews, and more.

In addition, each newsletter includes a roundup of articles that I have read with a focus on those by people of color. They may be recently published or older. My main focus is on technology and surveillance but I may include other subjects as they seem relevant.

Do I Have to Pay?

There are more than enough paywalls in journalism. I don’t want cost to be a barrier, especially not for a topic that I believe is deeply important. That is why all of NAZAR’s posts are free to access.

With that said, subscriptions are available if you want to support my work. You can subscribe for $7 a month or $70 for the entire year. You can also subscribe as a Founding Member for $150 per year.

Who Are You?

I’m a a writer focusing on Black Muslim womanhood and technology. I’m specifically interested in surveillance, Afrofuturism, and the revolutionary potential of fiction. In addition to creating NAZAR, I’m the founding Editor-in-Chief of The Drinking Gourd, a Black Muslim literary magazine.

Currently, I’m a staff writer at Mic. In addition, I was a 2017 Deeply Rooted Emerging Leaders Fellow with Muslim Wellness, 2019 Echoing Ida cohort member, and 2020 Bitch Media Writing Fellow In Technology. I’ve been published in numerous platforms, including: Teen Vogue, The New Republic, Catapult, and more.

Feel free to check out my portfolio.
